1-Year & 5-Year S.M.A.R.T
Goals
S.M.A.R.T. ⇒ Specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound
1-Year S.M.A.R.T Goal
S ⇒ A year from now I would like to be settled into a full-time position at a media/publication or production company/branch. I would prefer a role in editorial writing stories or producing news/entertainment segments within the health and wellness beat.

M ⇒ To measure this goal, before the end of my senior year, I want to have at least three potential job prospects or opportunities that are offering full-time positions immediately after my senior year.

A ⇒ I have already utilized the all-majors career fair and will continue to reach out to the companies I met there. I will also take full advantage of the Cathy Hughes career fair in March. Currently, I am interning with U.S. News and World Report as a health editorial intern. An ideal entry-level position would be joining the health editorial team full-time—an opportunity I believe holds promise.

R ⇒ This goal is quite relevant because I am currently in the mid-fall semester of my senior year. Achieving this goal will set me up after graduation to continue to build my career in the field of science journalism.

T ⇒ This goal is time-bound to a year. The first career fair has already passed and I am still connecting with the company representatives I met. The second career fair, specifically for Cathy Hughes students, is in March. Which is much closer to the end of the school year. Right now, I am working hard and diligently in my internship so that they may extend it to the spring semester.

5-Year S.M.A.R.T Goal

S ⇒ Five years from now, I want to be in medical school, preferably at NYU or any other medical school that has free tuition. I plan to pursue science journalism publications with tuition reimbursement to assist me in my pursuit of a post-baccalaureate, an advanced degree that will help me attain all the prerequisites I need to take the MCAT so I can apply to medical school, and hopefully, get accepted.

M ⇒ This goal is measurable in that numerous pieces need to fall into place for me to accomplish this in five years. My pursuit must start immediately after graduation and have a job right out of university that has tuition reimbursement and is in my preferred field of science journalism. Then I would need to apply and be accepted into a pre-med post-baccalaureate program, preferably in NY. This degree would take me one year at minimum to complete–perhaps two years, more realistically given that I will be working full-time and in school. From there, towards the end of that degree, I will begin preparing to take the MCAT. Depending on my score I will either apply to medical school immediately after or consider retaking the test.

A ⇒ I believe this goal is entirely achievable. I have the complete support of my family and loved ones. I’ve researched the potential schools I’d want to attend for my post-bacc and medical school. I’ve spoken to grad students who are currently in medical school and learned from their journey. My journey to medical school, although I may have planned it out, may not go exactly the way I planned, but I am determined to do whatever is necessary to achieve it.

R ⇒ This goal is relevant because it pertains to my overall goal and self-proclaimed purpose in life. I want to help black women in healthcare. This goal also stems from my motivation as a journalist is to advocate for women alike and provide accurate, digestible information so they can make informed decisions about their health—in a system that often fails them. I believe strongly in the presence of black female doctors representing black female patients because so often doctors of other races overlook them or disregard and dismiss their health concerns.

T ⇒ This goal is extensive in terms of timing. It is a long journey with many steps that must be planned accordingly. I believe that with strict planning, discipline, and determination I can achieve this goal within five years.
